Hart House is a good place to start a tour of the University of Toronto.
Information
Hart House is a gathering point for students at the University of Toronto. It is located in the main campus of U of T, known as St. George Campus. It has beautiful architecture and a classic interior. Behind it (North) is an Art Gallery (Art Museum at the University of Toronto).
Description
NORTH
If one walks north past the tower to Harbord St., then across the street is “Philosopher’s Walk” and Trinity College. Robarts Library is also on Harbord St (to the west), a main library which has limited public access. On Harbord St. one can catch the bus to Wellesley Subway Station. Walking north on “Philosopher’s Walk” leads to the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) on Bloor St. On Bloor St. is the Royal Conservatory of Music and Yorkville Shopping District (Bloor St & Avenue Road). Premium dining experiences are to the east in Yorkville. There is a McDonald’s across the street from the northern gates of Philosopher’s Walk. The nearest subway station at Philosopher’s walk is Museum Subway Station and St.George Subway Station.
SOUTH
To the south is Convocation Hall (graduation ceremonies), Gerstein Science Library (limited public access), and the Medical Sciences Building, and University College. On St.George St. and College St. is a Starbucks Coffee with good seating. There they can catch the College Streetcar. Further south is the Art Gallery of Ontario and the east entrance of Chinatown on Dundas St. West. On Dundas St. W is the streetcar.
WEST
To the West is St.George St, considered one of the main streets of St.George Campus. There, one will find the Arts and Sciences Building (under reconstruction plans), Department of Astrophysics, Engineering, Nu College and Woodsworth College. If one continues to walk west, they will meet Spadina Ave (streetcars).
EAST
To the east is Queen’s Park Cresscent, Victoria College (Pratt Library), and St. Michael’s College. If one continues to walk east, they will reach Bay St. and then Yonge St.
TIPS: Souvenirs and books can be purchased at the U of T bookstore at the Koffler Student Building at 214 College St.
Places to Eat: Cafes (during the academic year) are located at Hart House and Robarts Library. A long time nostalgic restaurant for students is on St.George St. known as Cora’s Pizza (Spadina Ave & Harbord St.). There is also a nostalgic fish & chips restaurant near Cora’s on 147 Harbord St. Otherwise, there are several other restaurants on Spadina Ave and College St., such as Chinatown (Spadina Ave & College St) or Little Italy (West of Bathurst St. and College St). There is a Burger King and Tim Horton’s at Spadina Ave & College St.
